Five Field projects included in landmark Ofgem cap and floor scheme for long duration energy storage

London, Friday 26th June - Field, the pan-European energy storage company, has today had five projects included in Ofgem’s minded-to decision for its cap-and-floor mechanism for long duration energy storage. The combined 1.6 GW / 26.8 GWh of projects, which will all be built using lithium-ion battery technology, represent almost a third of the projects notified under the Ofgem scheme, which will now move to the next phase of consultation. The five projects are:

  • New Deer in Northern Scotland, a 400 MW / 7,800 MWh project
  • Netherton in Northern Scotland, a 400 MW / 7,000 MWh project
  • Fyrish in Northern Scotland, a 200 MW / 3,500 MWh project
  • Rigifa in Northern Scotland, a 200 MW / 3,900 MWh project
  • Long Stratton in East Anglia, a 400 MW / 6,800 MWh project

Each of these projects are in late stage development, with construction scheduled to begin from late 2027. Ofgem has calculated that the five projects together will provide a £1.9 billion net benefit to the UK. This value will be delivered to consumers through reduced electricity system costs, which in turn will drive lower bills.

Today’s announcement will unlock significant investment in Britain to build a new generation of long duration storage for the UK’s electricity system, 40 years after the last such project - the Dinorwig pumped hydro storage plant in North Wales - opened. Field’s projects will deliver long duration battery storage at scale, storing electricity when renewable generation is abundant and releasing it back to the grid when demand is high.

Field’s five selected projects are deliberately located where they can provide the greatest value to the system: close to sources of renewable generation and behind increasing network constraints. They will help the UK make the most of its wind and solar resources, further reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and lower curtailment and balancing costs.

Each of these projects will provide between 16 and 18 hours of storage duration, representing a major milestone for the energy storage industry. This is the result of extensive improvements in lithium-ion technology, and more efficient optimisation of these assets.
